LED Lighting Industry Glossary Definition
This glossary explains common LED lighting terms in a clear and simple way, helping customers understand product features, specifications, installation details, and lighting applications.
From brightness and color temperature to waterproof ratings and control methods, each definition helps readers make better choices when selecting LED lighting products.
Dynamic Lighting
Lighting systems that can change color, intensity, or direction over time. It is often used to mimic natural daylight cycles or create specific moods in commercial and architectural spaces.
LBC Lighting
Generally refers to “Layered, Balanced, and Controlled” lighting design, or specialized products sold by high-end lighting distributors focusing on architectural aesthetics.
LED RGB DMX
RGB LED fixtures controlled via the DMX512 digital protocol. This allows for precise, synchronized color-changing effects in stage lighting and large-scale architectural facades.
COB Lighting
Chip-on-Board technology where multiple LED chips are mounted directly on a substrate. This creates a dense, uniform light source with high lumen density and excellent heat dissipation.
Full Spectrum
Lighting that covers the entire electromagnetic spectrum visible to humans and plants. It closely mimics natural sunlight, benefiting eye health and indoor plant growth.
Color Rendering Index
A quantitative measure of a light source’s ability to reveal the colors of objects faithfully compared to natural light. A higher CRI (up to 100) means more accurate color representation.
Color Temperature
A characteristic of visible light measured in Kelvin (K). Lower values (2700K) appear warm/yellow, while higher values (6500K) appear cool/blue.
Lumen Output
The total amount of visible light emitted by a source. Unlike wattage, which measures energy use, lumens measure the actual brightness perceived by the human eye.
Luminous Efficacy
A measure of how efficiently a light source produces visible light, expressed in lumens per watt (lm/W). Higher efficacy indicates better energy saving.
DALI Control
Digital Addressable Lighting Interface, an international standard protocol for professional lighting control. It allows individual or group control of lights via a two-way digital system.
DLC Listed
A certification by the DesignLights Consortium for high-performance commercial LED products. Being “DLC Listed” is often a requirement for utility rebates in North America.
Dark Sky Compliant
Lighting designed to minimize light pollution, glare, and skyglow. These fixtures direct light only where it’s needed (downward) to protect the nocturnal environment.
LED 3000K
LED lights that emit a “Warm White” glow, similar to traditional halogen bulbs. It creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere, ideal for bedrooms, living rooms, and restaurants.
E12 Light
A bulb with an E12 candelabra screw base (12mm diameter). It is the standard size for decorative fixtures like chandeliers, wall scone, and nightlights.
LED RGB E27
A standard E27 screw-base bulb that integrates Red, Green, and Blue LEDs to produce millions of colors. It usually includes a remote or app control for decorative lighting.
